Speech Delay in Children
When parents worry that their child is not talking enough, or that other children the same age seem far ahead, that feeling is worth taking seriously. Speech delay is one of the most common concerns in early childhood — and one of the most treatable when support starts early. At Beyond Therapy, we do not ask families to wait and see. We assess, we explain, and we build a plan together.
Signs to watch for
What parents often notice
Your child is 2 years old and still not putting two words together
Speech is there but very hard to understand — even you struggle sometimes
Your child knows what they want but gets frustrated trying to say it
Other children the same age seem to be talking in full sentences already
Your child's nursery or playgroup has mentioned something to you
Your child goes quiet around new people or in new places
Our approach
How therapy helps with speech delay
- 01
We assess exactly where your child's speech and language is right now — not compared to a chart, but in real terms
- 02
We find out whether it is a sound issue, a language issue, a fluency issue, or something else — because the therapy is different for each
- 03
Sessions are play-based so your child does not feel like they are being tested or corrected
- 04
You get specific things to do at home every day — not vague advice, but activities that actually move things forward
- 05
We track progress so you can see real change, not just feel like things might be improving

Speech Delay: questions parents ask
Honest answers for families trying to understand speech delay and what to do next.
At 2.5, most children have around 200 words and are combining them into short sentences. If your child has significantly fewer words or is not yet combining them, a speech therapy assessment is the right next step. Early support at this age produces the best outcomes.
Some children do catch up without support — but there is no reliable way for a parent to know which group their child falls into. An assessment gives you a clear answer instead of months of uncertainty. And if therapy is needed, starting earlier is always better.
No. Speech delay is about how the brain processes and produces language — it has nothing to do with how clever your child is. Many children with speech delay are very bright and simply need a specific type of support to unlock their communication.
